Hyper Pop: Definition and Features

The term hyper pop roughly translates to a new musical movement and a sub-genre of pop music differentiated by an exaggerated take on popular music. The artists of this genre of music draw inspiration from other forms of music, including hip-hop, techno, and electronic music. It also includes a fusion of pop elements into the lyrics and composition.

The term was given to the music industry for this maximalist genre of music by the British DJ Paul Simpson in 2021. He was of the opinion that the term hyper pop was too limiting concerning the kind of work he had been doing. He further added that it didn’t allow him to express his work while describing his music as a fad. Many artists excelled in this sub-genre of pop music. Some examples are Franz Ferdinand’s album – Live and Let Die, Pop music live by Kanye west, and A-ha-Something so beautiful performed by band Slint.

The constant creation of new music genres has caused the boundaries to fade between genre and types of music. It made the classification less strict while maintaining varying definitions. Artists today can create an entirely new sound or rhythm using electronic instruments like keyboards, vocals, or drum machines. This technological advancement in the music industry gives the artists creative space without having to depend on existing or popular sounds used in many genres.

While hyper pop music maintains its similarity with other modern music genres, it provides the artists to experiment and create new and extravagant music, which is equally unique. Many artists have turned to hyper pop for experimentation and to create unique sound combinations, but not all of them have been lucky enough to be successful at it.

One of the differentiating factors of hyper music is its heavy use of synthesizers and samples. The production technique used in the creation of sound in hyper pop music is also unique and complicated. The notable artists who have given popular albums in this music genre include Kanye west, Franz Ferdinand, Mate Boz Scaggs, etc.

The most remarkable among the list of rappers and musicians creating hyper pop music is Kanye West who released six albums under the label “the sound of hip-hop forever”. Many popular artists like Akon, Dot Da Genius, and producers like DJ Premier and Diplo are also on the list of people who made hyper pop a popular music genre.

Conclusion
The seeds for hyper-pop music have been sown during the development of PC music. This casual program was created for the music enthusiast, for playing freeware and sharing music. During that time, the music was quite simplistic, meaning you could hear it on the radio, but it was not something that would spark attention at a music concert. It was the evolving technology that led to the advancement of music styles and brought a change in the industry. The hyper-pop artists aimed to bring something different to the audience.
